Algorithm

An Iterated Function System fractal plots the attractor of a set of affine transformations in the form:

x' = a*x + b*y + c
y' = d*x + e*y + f

A number of control points are iterated through these functions a number of times and the image is slowly built up as a histogram recording the number of times each location was visited.

Software

This was the first generation of a piece of custom rendering software. (a gallery of images from the second generation is available here) The program itself is far too crusty for me to feel comfortable sharing it. No matter, there are other programs available if you wish to explore... For example, Scott Draves' Cosmic Recursive Fractal Flame software, and the programs derived from it, like Apophysis. Also, excellent program Ultra Fractal is capable of rendering IFS fractals.
